Most of us enjoy buying gifts for people. It is a way of physically demonstrating to someone that you care. After all, they say it’s the thought that counts don’t they? And to be honest it really does. Choosing what to buy for someone can be easy at times but it can also prove to be a nightmare. Retail shops seem to be so full of generic gift ideas and the thought of buying someone something purely for the sake of it which holds no real value or interest to them anyway is a waste of your own time and money. So here are a few suggestions to make sifting through the initially enticing options that little bit easier if you, like me, enjoy finding gifts for people which will put a smile on their face.
Gift Your Time
Sometimes you just can’t quite find that thing you really want to buy for somebody or just nothing grabs your attention. In situations like this we often just buy something because we feel obliged to but you can just gift someone yourself. By this I mean that your gift can be an invitation to go on a meal or a trip somewhere with you. Many people will actually appreciate your time much more than just a generic trinket you find in a high street store. Think of somewhere that your friend or family member has always said they want to go or somewhere that is a particular favourite of theirs. Gift them your company and if you want to make it even more special you could keep where you’re going a secret. It doesn’t even have to be going out you could have a movie night where they can choose all of the films and snacks and just kick back at your place.
Something of Personal Interest
If the person you are looking to buy a present for has a particular interest this can be a good place to start when deciding on a gift. However, it is fair to say that many a present has been bought for someone where the purchaser didn’t quite get the right end of the stick and they end up buying something not quite appropriate. If you are going to buy something connected to a hobby or passion of someone you need to find out more about their interest and what they do or don’t have. Speak with their friends to learn more and get a better feeling for what it is they are in to. You could also ask a few shrewd questions to discover if they need a replacement or new item for one which has recently broken for example. Not only will this be entirely useful to someone but it will show that you listen to what they have to say and they will feel like you truly care.
Personal Photographs
My dear mum takes great delight in receiving photos as gifts. Choice shots of family when printed on a canvas or professional finished off at a framing shop dot the walls of my mother’s house. Finding an old photograph of a loved one or reproducing an old black and white print they’ve had lying around for years but which has become a bit tatty is sure to bring delight to somebody. Maybe there was a particular event or get together in the last year which meant a great deal to somebody. Commemorate this moment with a photograph. Whilst the younger generation now are not so quick to print out their photographs you could consider making them a collage of some of their most memorable pictures and have it dated with a personalised comment on. The gift of photographs is something which people will be able to enjoy for years to come and the value hugely outweighs the cost.
