Finding a reputable, licenced and highly-qualified one on the other hand, requires a little more effort.
1 – Do your research / identify precisely what you need

And you might think: ‘an electrician is an electrician, surely?’ But they vary in speciality and affordability, so you want to make sure that you’re make an informed decision when the time comes.
2 – Seek out testimonials and follow up references
Many reputable electrical contractors rely heavily on word of mouth. So, head onto your social media accounts such as Facebook, and reach out. Ask your friends, associates or colleagues and see if they have any recommendations. Or if you have settled on a few potential contractors, see if you know anyone that has had any personal dealings with them. This will either reinforce your decision, or help you dodge a nasty bullet!
3 – Always be sure to verify qualifications, licencing and insurance
The last thing you need is to fall prey to an unlicensed & insured electrical contractor. Any reputable electrician who has worked hard to achieve their qualifications would be more than happy to share them with you. It’s a dangerous job and there is much at stake, so you have to make sure that you are completely covered; which means licensing and insurance are a must.
4 – Check your prospective electrician’s commercial background
Before you settle on a contractor, be sure to check their commercial background. If they have evidence of having worked on several big projects, you will have more confidence in their ability to deliver the standard of service that you are expecting.
5 – Cheapest isn’t always best!
Of course, it is always tempting to try and save as much money as you can. However, when it comes to something as important as your electrics, you cannot be too careful. If someone is dirt cheap, there’s likely a reason for that. They are either inexperienced / incompetent, or unlicensed. Often, spending that little bit extra will save you money in the long-run. It’s all very well going cheap, if you have to then pay someone else to come in and re-do the faulty electrics down the line.
It’s important to take your time and do your research. You might be on a tight schedule, but spending an extra day doing your research and ensuring that you find the very best contractor to assist you will be worth it. You don’t want to rush in, only to find that you’ve picked an incompetent ‘cowboy’ who’s done a terrible job of your electrics. Take your time, shop around for the best deals, follow up references and you can’t go wrong!
